“We are delighted to honour an iconic entrepreneur and visionary in the calibre of Mr. Reid” said Ian Faris, President and CEO, Ottawa Board of Trade. “His business acumen and remarkable leadership qualities are an inspiration to all. He truly exemplifies an impressive Ottawa and Canadian success.”

Mr. Reid founded Giant Tiger in 1961 with the opening of the first store in the Byward Market and began franchising in 1968. Known as Canada’s best-kept secret, the privately held company today has over 245 locations across Canada and over 8,500 employees. Under Mr. Reid’s leadership, Giant Tiger has also become a community-minded organization that donates more the $2 million annually to more than 1,200 local associations and charities across Canada.

Last month Giant Tiger opened the doors of its massive centralized distribution centre in Johnstown, Eastern Ontario. The new distribution centre covers approximately 600,000 square feet and features the first Symbotic system in Canada, the latest in shipping and warehousing technology. The centre supports Giant Tiger’s carefully planned growth strategy, which commits to opening 12-15 stores per year across Canada.

“Ottawa is full of incredible business success stories. Giant Tiger is further evidence of that. The narrative around Gordon Reid setting up his first discount retail store on the ByWard Market and this small undertaking growing into a truly great retail powerhouse is remarkable to say the least. OBJ takes great pride in bringing attention to Mr. Reid’s achievements” said Michael Curran, Publisher, Ottawa Business Journal.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Mr. Reid at the Best Ottawa Business Awards (The BOBs) gala on November 16, 2018 at the Westin Ottawa.

Mr. Reid joins a notable list of past winners including John Ruddy, Michael Potter, Shirley Westeinde, Jim Durrell and John Kelly.
