Ottawa Chamber of Commerce and West Ottawa Board of Trade Sign MOU

Ottawa, May 22, 2018: The Board of Directors of the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce and the West Ottawa Board of Trade announced today that they have unanimously approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to consolidate their respective operations into a single Chamber for the City of Ottawa.

The two chambers of commerce announced a consultative effort for their members, future members and economic development stakeholders that will take place over the following two weeks and will culminate in Special General Meetings for the members of the West Ottawa Board of Trade on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 and for the members of the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, June 6, 2018. Votes on separate days will allow those members of both organizations to participate.

The memberships will be asked to approve the MOU and empower their Boards to enter into a legal consolidation agreement, with a target effective date of July 1, 2018. The MOU calls for the establishment of a Provisional Board of Directors to oversee the transition of the former West Ottawa Board of Trade and Ottawa Chamber into the new Ottawa Board of Trade.

Following a number of months of successful collaboration, the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, West Ottawa Board of Trade and the Orléans Chamber of Commerce entered into consolidation discussions in late 2017. The concept of one Chamber for Ottawa has been a topic of discussion for several years, since the amalgamation of the municipality in 2001. At this time, the Orléans Chamber Board of Directors have declined to participate in this consolidation effort.

The West Ottawa Board of Trade and Ottawa Chamber Boards of Directors have agreed to provide an additional period of time for the Orléans Chamber to consider their participation in a trilateral consolidation.

The primary objective of one strong Chamber in Ottawa is that the entity will be uniquely positioned to impact community prosperity through advocacy and economic development; bring greater value and benefit to its members and potential members; and strengthen the voice of business in our community.
